Overview

The Love Quest is an open-world treasure hunt I built in Unity for Fundamentals of Game Design at MassArt in spring 2024. It is designed for couples in long-distance relationships. The player explores a park, answers questions set by their partner at three treasure chests, collects three keys, and unlocks a final chest holding a surprise.

Challenge

This was my first time using Unity. The full idea called for two players, one who hides the chests, writes the questions and picks the surprise, and one who searches. With limited time and beginner-level skills, I had to decide what to build now and what to leave for later, while keeping the game personal.

Approach

I started from a pre-built park environment, then focused my time on player movement, animations and the key collection logic. At each chest a riddle screen asks a multiple-choice question, such as a favorite color. A wrong answer sends the player back to that decision point, but keys already earned are kept. I designed the riddle screens with watercolor tropical flowers on soft pink and deep rose backgrounds, and a rustic gold key that matches the chests. Instrumental music plays in the background. I scaled the setting down from a remote island to a park so I could finish it.

Outcome

I delivered a playable visual demo with preset questions, locations and a final surprise, published on itch.io, where players left feedback in the comments. The project also includes a postmortem covering the build, visuals, sound, playtesting and next steps such as multiplayer and custom music.
