Overview
This is a campaign poster I designed for Malik Tanveer Aslam Sethi, a Pakistan Muslim League (N) candidate for the Punjab Provincial Assembly seat PP-21, Chakwal. The layout is set entirely in Urdu and combines a portrait of the candidate, the party's tiger election symbol and the crescent and star in a single upright sheet.
Challenge
Election posters in Pakistan usually crowd every inch with photos, slogans and colors. I wanted a poster that still carried everything a voter looks for, the party, the symbol, the seat and the name, but read clearly from across a street and held up when pasted in long repeating rows.
Approach
I cut out the candidate's portrait in Photoshop and placed him in front of a warm yellow-to-orange sun disc, which frames his white turban and gives the sheet one strong focal point. Above him, a line of engraved-style tigers walks across the top edge, with a small label marking it as the election symbol. The party name and crescent sit in green at the top, the seat number PP-21 is picked out in gold, and his name runs in heavy green Urdu type along the bottom. Everything else stays white, so the four elements do the work.
Outcome
The final piece is a portrait-format poster, shown both as a single hung print and as a wild-posted wall where the sheets repeat side by side. In that repeated layout, the tiger band and the name line join up across the sheets into continuous horizontal stripes.
